Pandemic's Silver Lining Slivers 10/10/2020 10:18:36 AM
There IS a silver lining to this Pandemic, notwithstanding the pain and loss suffered by countless souls throughout the world - and our very own country, And, with all due respect to the grieving and sick, we just have to keep on trucking, believing that we'll make it IF we stick together and do what we're supposed to. I'm a new 75 female living in Boston and, like all my fellow Americans, struggling to get through this incredible pandemic that is determined to test the very core of our existence and soul. I remain positive, hopeful and supportive of all fellow human beings despite our divergent views on this pandemic and how to navigate it.
I wasn't always that tolerant; I've "grown up" a bit since the beginning of the year and developed some qualities like patience, tolerance, compassion and non-judgment that needed work in my own, lifelong character-building efforts, for I truly love self development.
Perhaps what's changed the most is ACCEPTANCE of what is and finding my own ways of navigating what i can - and can not - control. I know what I'm supposed to do; Dr. Fauci sits on my shoulder constantly whispering "wear a mask, wash your hands and practice social distance"... and so I do. Religiously. Even if many of my neighbors friends or acquaintances don't for a myriad reasons - most of which I stopped judging because the anger and frustration took too much emotional energy and accomplished nothing. It took quite a bit of time to get there - and I'm still "refining" the process, but it's made a calmer person out of me. And it's a more positive way to deal with the virus threat day in, day out.
As I get ready for my "treat" - a daily, long walk through the beautiful parks of Boston, I make sure to wear my mask, a shield for the elevator and crowds, gloves, a spray bottle of alcohol (my "Covid Kit") and, with each wonderful step, count my blessings. My many blessings...
I am bound to encounter many folks without masks and joggers/runners coming toward me huffing and panting, no doubt ejecting possible life-threatening spittle my way. I no longer quietly swear at them and tense my body in anger; I simply get out of their way and, having been a marathoner myself, admire their possible running form, shoes, and wish them a safe run. And flash back at the days when I was a long-distance runner before my knees retired.
I'm just grateful - very grateful - I can still walk and am in the great shape that I am at my age, working out every day and leading a very healthy lifestyle.
Life is good. Every day is good. It's a gift; a GIFT!
