We both stood there proudly, my sister and me.
Reaching up to the heavens, for the whole world to see,
Everyone seemed to think this is how we would stay,
But then came that fateful September day.

We were standing there boldly and full of our pride,
Then I felt a sharp burning pain in my side.
There was an explosion, a large hole in my skin,
I then heard the cries of the people within.

I looked around to where my sister stood,
I could tell by her face that it was not good.
As I looked in her eyes and she looked into mine,
I saw her heart being ripped out from behind.

She tried hard to stay standing, she was hurt worse than me,
Is this really happening, how can this be?
I began to grow weaker as the moments went by,
It's hard to stand straight, but I know I must try.

We have to stay standing, of this there's no doubt,
We must give our people more time to get out.
Then came that horrible rumbling sound,
and I watched my dear sister fall to the ground.

She was just there beside me and now she is gone,
But I can't give up now, I have to hold on.
With all I had left I tried hard to stand there,
But this terrible burden I could no longer bear.

Just then my knees buckled and I started down,
Along with my people I fell to the ground.
The dust and the ashes, it all upward flew,
To darken what once, was a sky of pure blue.

I can't understand what could be in a mind,
That could make someone capable of this sort of crime.
There is no way to measure the horrible cost,
Of the lives on that day, so senselessly lost.

To all those who perished on September 11 2001

You humanized the WTC!!! That is so amazing, this is so well done, and how on earth did you even think of doing it this way.....you have the buildings courage and personality, you showed a bond between them, and the hoplessness and of their situation........this is pure genius, no kidding wood pecker! Heartwrenching! May we never forget and always remember!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( >tears <

The tragedy of 9-11-01 hit me especially hard because I happen to be a twin. We have always wanted to see the Twin Towers, but thanks to those no account lowlifes, we will never get that chance! :(

So many pieces on this, Jack, yet something happened, way, way inside me reading this one. It's so personal, so human... you have expressed the vulnerable side of us on that day with a sort of quiet impact! The poetry is pure, the punch to the gut, intense. This is one of the best for this day! katy xox.

" can't understand what could be in a mind,

Oh, Jack! Will we ever understand man's inhumanity towards man, or his lack of respect for our planet, etc.? Will we ever learn?

Heartfelt poem, well done!

Jack, I cried when I read this poem during its original posting and again, I cannot help but cry. You have magnificently summarized what so many of us felt on that day -- two beautiful towers gone and a skyline changed forever. May we never forget and may our thoughts and prayers always reside with the victims and their families, left behind to grieve.
Take care,
Jill
