The cornfield buzz

One of the high school soccer teams that I cover used to play on an elementary school field next to a cornfield. I've always wondered about the sights and sounds that are found infarm fields, even when no one is there.

The sun begins its slow descent

as autumn's hours meet

the summer sounds.

The heat still makes

its last stand,

as the corn droops

and ripens for the harvest.

While the bugs scream

and buzz throughout the field.

The mosquitoes dive bomb the field,

like screaming byplanes they strafe the field.

The ants march and measure the corn

while awaiting the dark.

The crops are coming of age

row after row, they mature.

One day, the corn is tall,

it stretches high towards the sky

in crackling humidity.

The next day it's gone,

neat litle rows,

A field picked clean and

headed for the silos.

With just a few dried stalks,

remaining to look like indian lancers

in a boy's imagination.

Wonderful quiet day with the sun setting upon the rows and rows of mature corn. I'm as you with colors and senses...the music insects make and the way the stillness makes the whole picture a cinema.

I love the visions you pen. Lovely country canvas.

Blessings and love,
Susan

I enjoyed the sense of time that you have enbedded in your lines. The order of growth , with multiple worlds of insects coexisting with a high school soccer team makes your verses quite unique.

It is true that cornfields can be fascinating. I guess that's why there are quite a few corn mazes around here (LOL). Seriously though, I do love the sounds of the wind sighing through the corn stalks... ...and the hum of insects in the sunny heat of a summer's day. Thank you for eliciting some images in my mind, Steve. Love and peace to you,

Regis
