Dew drops on windshield
Wipers toil but fail to clear
Peering through the streaks
Early morning sun
Shining brightly in my face
Windshield now opaque
Driveway curves to right
Retaining wall does not care
When trucks fail to yield
Stucco sings to me
Like fingernails on chalkboard
Exchanging paint jobs
White gouges revealed
Like modern glacial epoch
Caveman drives to work

Shortly after I was paralyzed and renewed my license with my grandmother's 55 Buick that had power steering and automatic transmission, I lined up a date with a local girl so that we could go to the submarine races at the local drive-in theater.
My father gave me the use of his 57 Buick station wagon with a strict order that I let her drive so that I wouldn't have an accident driving with my paralyzed hands. I drove to her house, and she drove to the theater. When the movie was over, instead of leaving the speaker in the window to pull the cord off like she was supposed to do, she turned too sharp and put a scraping dent in the driver's side door with the speaker post. Upset, I told her to get in the passenger seat and drove her and myself home.
Needless to say, my dad was not pleased. But I was glad it was his decision to have her drive.
