Dementia is Contageous

Mom has Alzheimer’s and lives in an assisted living facility. Her near term memory failed several years ago and her long term memory is fading fast. Every day is a new adventure. I recently spent a continuous few days with her bringing her here to Missouri and after a little while, I swear it’s contagious. This is for all those health care folks who deal with those in need

Poem Artwork

While I’m no doctor it is true

And this may sound outrageous

Time spent with mom and now I stew

I’m sure that dementia is contagious

Can’t find my keys to drive the car

Not feeling too courageous

Forgot what I was looking for

I swear dementia is contagious

What’s his name, what does he do?

So much for business advantageous

A stop sign I somehow ran through

I know that dementia is contagious

Left half my stuff in my shopping cart

At least I didn’t get rampageous

Not knowing why is not too smart

I say that dementia is contagious

With all the stupid things I do

I feel a little bit umbrageous

It might be time to house me too

I tell you dementia is contagious

Dimentia is like Alhzeimer. I don't think it's contagious; but fun read all through. Thanks!

As usual, you've taken a very serious subject and turned it quite humorous. My mother is also in assisted living. She has lost almost all of her hearing and has aphasia from a stroke that makes her verbal and written communication very difficult, but she is sharp as a tack with no sign of dementia… Just frustration and anger.

While I have some of those characteristics you mention, my helpers, through their association with me, have become very forgetful of late. My fervent hope is that they won't go off in the morning and forget to get me out of bed. ;-)

Hah! I am pretty sure I have at least the early stages of dementia, Patrick. I'm holding on and hoping before I am completely lost I'll be able to take charge of the situation.
