the guns of August rolled around
shooting down into the town
"We were not ready" said the King
oblivious to suffering
"We were not strong" said the Field
"We ran away. We had to yield."
"They were so brave," said the slaves
digging 20,000 graves
"The conflict could not be denied,"
our leaders swore and prayed and lied
fire again the guns of August
go to war then if you must
sabotage the word of God
but don't pretend that you are just
the trenches filled with stink and mud
the air so foul you could not breathe
our veins turned black with poisoned blood
our bodies crawled with lice and fleas
all day and night the guns of August
pound barbed wire in the dirt
shell shock soldiers hearts that busted
living in a world of hurt
and all for patriotic pride
20 million widows cried
bring again the guns of August
to the Battle of the Somme
know that none will be left standing
when December finally comes
and when at last the war was over
guns of August last were still
one more conflict for whatever
warriors run out of will
still we fight to fight forever
fight for comrades and our friends
no one knows who lost or won
there never really is an end
and with the sunrise comes a tide
that leaves behind the men who died
so put away the guns of August
try the fallen for their crimes
empires rise and are busted
peace is brief until next time
