THE SPIDER AND THE SCORPION

the spider and the scorpion
were fighting in the ring
surrounded by a dozen men
who'd bet on any thing

some wore the Anzac khaki
some wore the rifle green
on a hot and dusty day
in damned Gallipoli

meanwhile down the Dardanelles
floating on the stream
bloated mules were taken for
the German submarines

and boatloads full of corpses
with black holes for their eyes
silent as the midnight
with a look of last surprise

meanwhile the brave black spider
dodged the scorpion sting
we heard the Turks a cheering
we heard the Tommies sing

the scorpion fought the spider
and death she did resist
as if there else was nothing
in the world that did exist

and when the test was over
the spider finally won
the soldiers stepped upon her
and went back to their guns

eventually we all went home
and thought the game was done
but how could we expect to know
twas only World War One
