The way it was

The weather
Is gray and warm
I hear thunder rumbling
At a far distance
Soon it will be upon us
Reeking havoc.

The sand cranes bellow
Their bass trumpet songs
As they stroll along
Their old stomping grounds
Where now we stand
On concrete, tar pavement
And manicured lawns.

Dig they will their feet
Standing tall
As the storm pelts them
Unmercifully
In the open
Where no shelter resides.

Some say
Before the first bulldozer
Grazed the opened fields
They once upon a time
Called home.

"The way it was"

Once such a beautiful thing, and these days I sadly find it harder and harder to find remnants of what once was.

Conscientious poetry...the uprooting of nature...kind of like a foreclosure on the animals' abode at the manipulating hands of mankind...put out of their habitat at the expense of politicians' greed the government brass trumpeting ignorance resulting in extinction of species...The way it was, was the right way...nice mini documentary, William.

I live in suburbia, but the wild keeps trying to come back in. I don't envy when their get on the large patches of concrete, or worse, blacktop.

Cool write.

As the population grows so does the need for new homes and what was once grazing land,is no longer. Population control will be the next government mandate forgetting about the boarders and all who enter this Country illegally. Look what China did.

I absolutely love the fact that I live far enough in the woods that I am in the animal habitat. I've seen foxes, turkeys, possums, raccoons. bobcats, huge owls and hawks. The only animals I haven't seen personally is a bear, or a snake, but I have seen evidence of them.
When I first moved in I was blowing leaves and found an arrowhead. That made me sad because this area was once populated heavily with Indians, Creek and Cherokee. But you know the story, because of "Manifest Destiny," White people broke treaties and sent them packing.
The animals were hunted almost to extinction, but they have rebounded, the Native Americans have been able to get back at us with casinos everywhere, but not until recently.
thanks for sharing.

It's just like the deer around here. People call them a nuisance. WE are the biggest nuisance.

Love ya!
