Poor Champ
Ten human years old
I think he's arthritic
slowing down more each day
Descending stairs
Has become quite a chore
Slow and gingerly
Where once upon a time
He ran down eagerly.
Now he sits next to me
Sleeping
Remembering days of old
Obviously
As he snores, his front paw
Are in motion
His tail waggling uncontrollably
as they were once when running
In those fertile green fields
Of his Elysium
As he dreams
Of his yesterday's.
He is my son's pet
Old yellow kind of Retriever
I see him a few times year
For I am not from around here.
Here I try to spend time
With him
Take him for long walks
So he may exercise
His weary bones
And I to reboot my thoughts.
A fine Ode to Champ. I have a few old and arthritic dogs myself right now, and like us when we get old, they appreciate a little kindness, compassion, and companionship.
Poor Champ probably does not feel poor when he is with you, he probably feels inside that he is a puppy again...you give him hope & as they say, hope springs eternal...-e-

But I can relate the stair part, both descending and ascending.
old bones make for slow movement. I do snore too, but I don't think I wag my tail.
