The walker
Recovering from a mending body
Once again walks his familiar
Paths and lanes
This time with an aide
Coincidentally Called
A walker.
Happy to be on the road
He placed his headsets
To ease his thoughts
Along the way.
He spied what he thought
Was road kill
By the curb side
A raccoon laid still
As he neared, the critter
Lifted his head
A solemn look of hope
Resided within it's eyes
As he stared
At the walker passing by
Was he injured?
Thought the walker
As he walked past
Maybe waiting to die.
The walker looked back
After several paces
And so did the Injured creature
With the same
Compassion seeking stare.
The scene
Broke the walkers heart
He knew there was nothing
He could have done
So he continued his Journey.
After a while
When the helpless critter
Was out of sight
The scene once again
Took a toll upon The walkers heart.
He did an about face
Walking as sure footed
As he could
Maybe he can call For assistance.
He arrived at the scene
Nothing was there
No coon, no blood, Nothing to indicate
It ever occurred, it was gone.
Only the critter's image
Of a sad hopeless stare
Seeking Compassion
Remained
within the walker's mind.
Very potent work. I know what it is like to have to use a walker at times and I feel for this animal that needed someone to care. Sad that most people would just turn away and pretend they never see a person in need.
I THINK THE WALKER, WHEN HE THOUGHT ABOUT IT, RELATED TO THE COON. BECAUSE, IN THE END, WE ALL COULD STAND A BIT OF COMPASSION - EVERY NOW AND THEN. I HOPE BANDIT WASN'T FOUND FOR A GOOD REASON; MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE HELPED HIM OR HE FOUND THE STRENGTH OF MOVE HIMSELF. GREAT WRITE, WILLIAM - THANKS FOR SHARING. Now that's very interesting. And reads like a true life experience.
When I used to walk, I always sought out a natural place to do it. I don't understand people who listen to music while walking or riding a bicycle. There are so many sounds out there to hear like the time I heard a screeching bobcat run through tall grass and I couldn't even see him. Or the birds. Who doesn't like to hear the birds chirp?
Compassion, it’s a needful word in life; seeing as, no one can rightly predict the future. Then no one knows when he or she might become in need a little aid; whether of a stick, a walker or whatever kind. And so, it is essential to show compassion where it’s necessary, whilst one can, for its more like lending to God!
A great piece of work, William! May you be blessed!
Quite a take on the word compassion, William. When we pass by someone seeking, needing compassion is a sense of helping someone out is lost forever. Your point was brought home to me.
