The Good, the Bad and Me

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, con a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
Robert A. Heinlein
[Notebook of Lazarus Long]

This is for the most human man I know.

as every moment of your life

totals itself up on the adding machine,

and all you want, is to hit the delete key

because no matter how many pluses there have been,

the minus’ keep piling up in the red zone.

and you’re falling to earth without a parachute

wondering how much further can you go,

screaming, “but I’ve dodged every bullet that came my way,

look my body has survived.”

but you my love, and I, know

that it is the hunger within your soul

that needs to be fed the most.

and you my love, and I, know

that spirituality is not in a holy book,

but is felt pulsating in every living cell

all on its own and without direction or intervention.

and you my love, and I, know

that the sweetest wine,

the moistest fruit,

the tastiest cut of beef,

throbs under the weight of love.

it is that…which makes living a pleasure.

so as you rest your head into your hands,

and the tears of misery make the good

drown in a sea of bad,

and all the excitations of the past

that seem to now total zero,

make you wonder, what was it all for,

I offer you a taste of a battle

that needs not be waged.

for all it is, is me

prepared just the way you like it,

with love.

Great write, Sarah! You manage to unite in a rainbow of succinct expressions the most abstract, digital end with deep, colorful emotions.
I'm impressed. Franz

Oooooeeeee oooooeeeee oooooo THOK THOK THOK
This is very moody and dramatic Sara. You make some great points about life and spirituality in a well written and thought out piece of writing.
But that line about beef is going to go down like a lead zeppelin with vegans (wink)

Ah Sara, this blows my mind. I am a terrible critic but honestly, I wouldn't mess with a single syllable. Just the thing that I needed before bed.
