On page nine twenty nine
of the Concise Columbia Encyclopedia,
paper back edition,
there could have been some mention
of me somewhere between
the poet William Carlos Williams
and William the Silent.
Columbia could have squeezed me in
by excising William of Orange,
already covered under the aformentioned
Silent Will,
After all I've been known to paint
the town red, ride a high horse,
bark up the wrong tree, beat
the band, whip the devil
around the stump,
paddle my own canoe, take
to the tall timber
fly the coop,
run amuck, cut the Gordian knot,
chase a wild goose, carry
coals to Newcastle, and on occasion
be as funny as
a barrel of monkeys.
Ain't that worth a few laconic lines?
