This appeared originally in Barn and Snow, a Holiday Poetry Anthology, edited by BookSurge 2001

If I gave myself a Christmas gift,
I’d make Christmas past my Christmas present,
Christmas as it ought to be.

To hear the Christmas church bells ring,
To sing the songs we love to sing,
To see the Christmas candles glow,
To kiss beneath the mistletoe,
That’s the Christmas gift I’d give to me,
Christmas as it ought to be.

If I gave myself a Christmas gift,
I’d make every day like Christmas Day,
Christmas as it ought to be.

To see white Christmas fill the sky,
To taste that spicy mincemeat pie,
To see good friends and family
All gathered by the Christmas tree.
That’s my Christmas gift from me to me,
Christmas as it ought to be.

If I gave myself a Christmas gift,
I’d fill my sock with peace on earth,
Christmas as it ought to be.

To put an end to bigotry,
To wipe out wars and poverty,
To say to millions everywhere,
The world is big enough to share.
That’s the Christmas gift I’d give to me,
Christmas as it ought to be.

Yes indeedy, if Christmas was, in your terms, as it ought to be, then so many fiscal savings could be made per capita in order to finance the principles of your final stanza... we could even go as far as to give the excess equivalent cost of our overblown festivities towards ending poverty, too... But then, peeps will tell me that money is not entirely at the root of the problems. So back to the drawing board... Thank you for this Christmas present to Me, too, Gene! :)) I'm glad I bought your ought! xx

Exactly!!! I'd give the same gift to 'me' too. "My Christmas Gift to Me" is the way it ought to be INSTEAD OF give me an iPod, give me diamonds, give me a Mercedes, give me toys, give me a gift certifical to Neiman Marcus, me, me, me. I'm thinking of the 'Gift of the Magi'--I think that was the title for that short story. Give me a wish and it would be to return to the family Christmas I grew with where the family gathered and there was laughter and hugs and kisses.
