A Romp in Rhyme

Meant to get a job this week, but I was on a lucky streak.

Won fifty on the lottery! forty-five is all it cost me.

'Course you can't rely on luck; you lose a few to win a buck.

But not that many ads I see can meet my job expectancy:

One day a month from one to two--I do have other things to do.

Ere I'd punch another clock I think I'd put my soul in hock.

Thought about a trav'ling job; trouble was my thingamabob

Needed brakes, a tire or two, new horn, and a jigamadoo.

Might take a job at night if I can sleep and the pay is right.

It's not that I'm averse to toil; I have burned the midnight oil.

But working's such a waste of time, and a lousy word to rhyme.

If I labor morn till night, who'll feed the birds, fly my kite?

Some say it's just an alibi, but things get worse the more I try.

Now take what happened yesterday: I could not find my resume.

Have to get a good job soon or learn to sing the pauper's tune.

What dough I had, inflation shrank; I may as well go rob a bank.

now if a perspective of the true value of proper labor was ever written, this, I say this, is it -- the pauper's tune is not unknown to many these days -- inflation has become the big spender replacing the affluent these days -- I thought about pursuing employment in the field of automotive design -- until I realized I could not possibly design a proper replacement for a jigamadoo -- although I did once design a perfect, latchetlever -- Edsel and Studebaker used them -- a marvelous work to read and enjoy you have shared with us Gene -- resumes, the thought brings me to the verge of nausea at my age -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

If you're going to rob a bank, be sure to do so in the AM, because by 5 when they close, the dollar will be worth even less. Enjoyed this piece.

... sounds like my cuppa Earl Grey, Gene! :)) Eileen's right... you should be paid or at least a current laureate... they don't do much, after all! I love work, though... I could sit and look at it all day. Your Et cetera couldn't be any betterer. Rhyming Romps look good on you. xx

The New Yorker just had a cartoon with a bank robber with his bag of loot saying to his well dressed neighbor at the bar "Hey! We can't all work for Goldman Sachs." Funny, sad and true, like your poem.

And as you say, that getting up and dressing and putting in the time really puts the kybosh on the things we WANT to do. Time to start getting used to rice and beans and living in the newest Banana Republic on the block--US.

The banks have already been robbed by bigger thieves. How about claiming a corner near a freeway off ramp? Tell me that isn't work--standing around all day holding a sign that says "Homeless. Need Job. God Bless. Any Help Appreciated." Those feet and legs must hurt after being on that job for sixteen hours in the sun breathing fumes. I wonder what kind of health care those guys get. Are they stand up comedians? :O)

Witty, clever, well written, Gene,
all of those good things, and with a few digs at how things are...and a 'jigamadoo' ...now there's a word and a half! And that final line...do you need someone to drive the getaway pick-up? Call me.
