At this hour of the morning when
the late late show is later than you think
and the trees are beginning to chirp,
you dance madly around the kitchen,
your companion a shapely bar stool,
to Artie Shaw’s Begin the Beguine, not
missing a step when you sip your scotch.
As music sweeps you from kitchen to dining
room, you admire your dazzling panache
in the mirror above the sideboard just
at that moment when you smartly dip your
partner and trip, careful not to spill the scotch
held capriciously in your right hand, the
stool cradled lovingly in your left arm,
as you and the music wind down.

What an extraordinary visual one gets upon reading this piece, Gene! I feel a bit voyeuristic somehow. Outstanding! ~Elizabeth

This is very good, Gene. You bring your reader right along with you in this clever poem. I especially loved your description, "... and the trees are beginning to chirp ..." Wonderful imagery!

I'm so pleased that I visited your site. The "Last Dance" is a wonderful portrayal of something we have all done at some time and your words paint such a vivid picture of the memory. Your writing style: polished, imaginative... and so entertaining! You have a new fan!!!

There are many things layered in these lines...all quite eloquently veiled in a sense of sadness.

well written, I can envision the whole dance! I'm not sure who was the smoother dancing partner, the scotch or the stool? :) Happy Easter ~ Morgan

On one level this is witty, elegant
and highly intelligent writing;
on another, it's deeper and laced
with courage and doing and going on,
and i love every word of it, Gene.

no, don't ever spill the scotch damn it! the stool can go, the girl can go; but don't ever spill the scotch!!! fantastic poem gene!! oh, when the trees start chirping, ouch, know that feeling well. the gray around the window-sill, the sounds of lawn sprinklers, morning papers tossed into doorways, sound of car doors slamming shut, the distant hum of traffic, and one asks, oh God, what the hell am i still doing up?

Gene, A few years ago, this was a scene oft appearing at my place too. Well, except the Scotch was likely brandy and there were no shapely bar stools to be found. Oh and Artie Shaw was more likely Merle Haggard or Bob Seger.

Thanks for the memories. Dick

"Wasn't that a party"? Scotch is that lovely girl with the dark pools for eyes that listens and never talks back. The girl you were dancing with is a real stiff. She can't lead, just follow! Gene, your story is marvelous. Fabulous imagery. I was sitting on the sofa, watching the entire event. I loved the music too my dear friend. You are a superb teller of tales. I once had an elementary school teacher that could spin a yarn or two. She held me mesmerized for fifteen minutes at a time. But she was no match for your skills. Thanks for sharing your Scotch, music and dance with me. Yes, that green tint you see on your monitor is from my envy. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

I can just see this wonderful event!
The talented dancer!
The music an aphrodisiac!
The companion a ...barstool? We girls love to dance too, Gene. You've had enough practice now on those difficult dance steps and it's time to get the girls dancing :)
Ever,
Christine
