Is she the woman I met last night?
I can’t recall her name.
The woman who thanked me when
I offered her champagne?

Is she the woman I think I know?
I know I know the face.
The woman who giggled when
I rearranged her lace??

Is she the woman I kissed last night
back by the telephone?
The woman who hugged me when
I said I lived alone?

Is she the woman who laughed a lot
at my off-color joke?
The woman who kissed me when
I told her I was broke?

Is she the woman who squeezed my hand
when I was feeling low?
The woman who paid the check
and said it’s time to go?

Is she the woman who left with me,
said ev’rything’s all right?
If she’s the woman, please tell her please,
she saved my life last night.

I really loved the last stanza! This is why I don't drink champagne, makes me stupid. I can drink anything else with reasonable control. Patrick

These lyrical lines have me completely enamored. I, like John Flanagan, love this approach. I also like the light feel of the entire piece juxtaposed with the more serious/weighty last line.

Hey, Bartender is a delightful, lyrical poem that charms us with the questions you ask and the words you so cleverly write. A thoroughly enjoyable romp through an evening spent at the local pub. Good work, Gene. Joy L. Hale

"...rearranged her lace" did you?
Love the approach, the constant questioning
of reality, possibility, memory and event;
you are a subtle seducer, Gene, of us all
and this is a delight to read.

Gene, why would I doubt for a single moment that chivalry yet exists? As long as you are about, it will ride proudly upon the back of a white stallion. You know, it is unfortunate many think chivalry is simply an archaic state of social consciousness without value in a world convinced of equality with no romance and passion for life and living. Whatever you are acquiring all of your poetic yearnings from, send me a sample if you please. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

So funny, and I find it moving actually, that comfort that comes from the human connection! I have never been in a situation myself, and if I had he'd better remember my name :), but I think this is sweet and sexy with a wonderful attitude of openness.
It seems Ed, Andy and Jerry have all been there my goodness!
Blessings,
Christine
