Poem Artwork

High mountains serve as temples

For visiting godheads and deities

Who do not approve themselves

In the earthly manifestations but

Who dwell in the fibres of gems

And stones, feeding from jasper

And communicating by virtue of

Opal, ruby and, most of all, jade.

Some are permanently stationed

And known as the Kings of Cliffs--

The guardians of hallowed places,

The gateways to a new dimension.

Here in the West we have our Tetons, our Cascades and Rockies, and even our most Eastern looking domes of Yosemite. But I've always been enamored by the worn down mountains of Asia. Not the growing white peaks of the Himalayas, but the ancient Gothic temples of eroded rock that rise up like pillars in the mist from the flat plain. They do conjure up mystical thinking in their ancient and mysterious way.

Mountains have always been the guardians and gateways to the gods, particularly in Greek mythology, but in other religions as well. John
