I ask myself about eternity
What could it possibly mean
That something goes on forever
Surely it is not what it seems.
That past is truly past
There is no guesswork there
Now just dead and gone
With no time left to spare.
The future is just for the asking
It is waiting patiently in the wings
Its true moment lies in baiting
Our thoughts on what life will bring.
Then there is the ever-present now
It just sits there hidden behind our brow
If we forget for even a second
It will be gone without having been reckoned.
Seize the moment hiding behind your brow
Eternity is nothing but the ever-present now
The point of time’s arrow destined forever to fly
Into the face of eternity on this side of the sky.
We are certainly living, "on this side of the sky." When I hear things like, our sun will burn out in 11 billion years and that it has already existed 5 billion years, I get a bit of a sense what eternity is like. I don't think eternity is boring because it is filled with catastrophic incidences like the asteroid that is passing within the orbit of the moon right now and could just as easily made our Halloween a historical moment in history for those few that would have survived the impact… Fortunately, not to be.
That's why the idea of heaven being some perpetual state of well-being seems weird. The enrichment in our life is its changing nature and our very eventful and very short existence in the scale of things. Seizing the present is probably the best way to live a life and let eternity be whatever it will be, even if never achieving it.
