Sun massages my shoulders,
gives a glow to my face,
and sends nourishment to my
aching bones.
Heat in October and November.
Eighty degrees, car windows down,
“Boys of Summer” playing loud and fast
while my hair blows along the breeze
that runs beside the Tennessee River.
Girls in tank tops and shorts.
Bright summer colors still hang in the closet.
Sleeping nightly in our lofty cabin of a porch.
Awakened by roosters and loud birds.
Acorns fall and hit our tin roof.
Dried leaves crunch
under the paws of woodland creatures.
Visible autumn in brilliant red
and golden trees.
A Christmas open house with
crowds entering and exiting stores
opened for the occasion.
Santa sweltering beneath a red velvet suit,
hat and heavy boots.
He waves and invites hot sticky children
to sit on his lap.
Soft warm rains enliven green ferns
while pressing dried leaves to the ground.
A gift of a very long summer.
A gift of people enjoying open air
and relishing the light.
Damn server went down after my previous epic review!! I am saving this one, Janet, as I think it is one of your very, very best, and you articulate this phenomenon so very well that I can sense it in every part, like I actually am experiencing it for myself, you make it THAT real. Your artist's eye has yet again captured just the right detail to bring your canvas alive with a whole movie scenario here - and I am greatly envious of your circumstance: warm sun on aching shoulders I could do with right now and know only too well how therapeutic that is - as it must be for you, too. Colourful and refreshing, it has ALL the ingredients for the feel-good factor rolled into one. Brilliantly portrayed, thank you. Kate xx
What a masterpiece. This is exactly what I am living here in Staten Island, New York. These days are gifts and you have described what I'm living right now pefectly. Thank you for sharing this lovely write.
What a gorgeous description of the perfect Indian Summer! That artists' eye really sprinkled this poem with delightful scenery Janet. I could see, smell, FEEL it....those last beautiful days of warmth are a real "gift" - as certainly this poem is for those of us who read it.
a gift indeed, though it's gonna be a little weird come Thanksgiving.. it was 80 degrees IN MY HOUSE here in Hotlanta today. very strange to see leaves of flaming red and orange as I'm out on the deck with no shoes and shorts. nice capture here. Dawn
