He sat by the water’s edge at night

grizzled, whiskered old stump

eyes caught for a moment

fastened to a galaxy of fishes

reaching beneath cold, sulking lily pads

net-like as hands

dabbler God scattering them in waves

instinctively making merry with them

darting through the shadows of pondweed

dancer in the company of minnows.
