You've got the right idea, Ed! I love it! I want to get a RV and live a gypsy life similar to the one you describe for weather reasons and to see the sights! I really enjoyed this, Ed!

When I was a teen we my friends and I used to hang out with this dude in his 20's who had a houseboat. He left his wife in Rhode Island, docked in New York and never went back. He would tell us stories about his travels. He would borrow steaks from the butcher to pay back for a favor (barter) then again sometimes he would steal food from a grocery store. We had a great time by the campfire exchanging stories but what I admired most was his freedom to live 24/7 on the water.
A few years ago I stayed with my wife on a houseboat for a week in Rhode Island on a 40 ft. which was docked the whole time. She loved it but I just felt like it was like living on a glorified house trailer on a dock. So much for my dreams and love of living on the water. So, I kicked that off my bucket list and moved on.
My greatest love on the water these days is kayaking. It's so peaceful and serine and effortless on a calm river. Motor boats are just too noisy and kind of boring. You go by too fast and you miss out seeing the wildlife around you. Simple is better. Just like I prefer riding a bike vs. driving in a car for the same basic reasons. Slow down and enjoy the sun and the clouds. Check out the trees rusting in the wind. Live live and enjoy, my friend.
I hope you can scrape together the cash to live the life you like during your retirement years that will stretch out on the horizon like the Atlantic of your life.
Boating is great. We love canoeing. Great exercise. Seems to me Ed, $5,000.00 might be a bit too much for that homely clunker. A bit claustrophobic too I'm thinking, unless you like close quarters. Dream on. Peace... r
