Dialysis Blues...

Dialysis blues are nothing new,
I am just a member of a big crew,
We are all just part of a dialysis international stew...

Poem Artwork

 I got them dialysis blues,

My left arm is getting all black and blue,

Three days a week I get by big needles poked,

Being attacked by these needles on my part is strictly unprovoked…

The needles used are a seventeen,

That size is big & mean,

I’m thankful for the numbing cream,

Otherwise the pain upon insertion,

Would create of tears a veritable stream…

Three days a week, three plus hours a day,

Not a thing I enjoy in anyway,

The fistula is connected somewhere around muscular sinew,

But to stay alive I’ve gotta with it continue,

Much to my own personal dismay!

"That size is big & mean,"

You flat-out got that right, my friend. Hang in there . . .

Dialysis seems to be like some medieval torture imposed on those unfortunate to have problems with cleaning their blood. I recall the husband of a cousin who had a cow kick him in the kidney and had to be on dialysis for over 20 years, driving to the hospital in all kinds of weather over 30 miles on country roads. And the routine is rather devastating, tying down one's freedom and lifestyle to the source of dialysis.

You're right about paying the price to stay alive. I will take all measures that keep me alive until I'm no longer a menace to society. When that happens, euthanize me.

Ron

We do what we gotta do, and obliviously, you are a strong person to endure what you've gotta do. The alternative is not a pleasant thought. Hang in their my friend.

Not an easy burden to carry Ed. You've described it effectively here. Our son Sean had dialysis for a year and a half before he got his kidney transplant. He was twenty-two when it happened. Life has so many diverse challenges. No one is immune. Stay strong, and keep writing. R

Sorry Ed, I am sympathetic but I can only relate it to taking my first wife to chemo every week. I would hold her hand while she would drift off into another state of mind. The needles would get to me. I just could not look at them. I still can't look at them. So I close my eyes and think of a song that I like. I do that at the dentist. Music really helps. I guess that's why we love music so much. It can take away the pain and help us drift away into another state of mind. I hope music can help you as well. Take care...

My sympathy to you, Ed. The needle used for donating blood is not small either and I hate needles. But after 167 donations, I should be used to it and oblivious. I am not. Wishing you the best with love and peace,

Regis.
