Having read the many recent editorials re: Ringling Brothers’ turn of conscience, might it be time for the rest of us to think of that important word?

Poem Artwork

Peacocks strut their power-play feathers to get some hammy.
Flamingos strain pink shrimp, always eating with beaks open.
Hummingbirds say, “Give me some sugar baby.”

Paramecium make slipper sandwiches in yin-yang love.
Flat worms confess, “You’re my favorite host so
I’ll swallow your soul… and the cookies you just ate.”

Kudus horn-stab plants for dessert, easy peasy.
Gazelles bounce over rivers like a giant slinky
to avoid voracious crocodile appetites.

Hungry, hungry hippos, wear tutus, and eat pond veggies,
wiggling their little ears.
Rhinos are gentle, eating grass and the alarm birds have his back.

Gorillas eat lice with their sausage fingers.
Lemurs open big eyes to find throwing-fruit.

Wallabies wish to be invited to a kangaroo dinner,
and koalas watch the fray from tasty eucalyptus heights.

Lemmings look for cheese, but blindly commit clifficide.
Chinchillas love volcanic ash more than Chilean berries.

Humpback whales adore sardines and krill,
swimming to change the TV set that is ocean’s reality.
Dolphins trust us too much as we steal their tuna, so
why do they bother to rescue us? They’re not jaded.

Elephants sample bark and roots, but their favorite is wild fruit,
beyond the reach of man…their own proboscis ladder.
Their cousins released from circus torture now roam as a herd
in a preserve, full of natural munchings.

Lions wait until brunch to wake up.
Jaguars climb thick trees to pounce on a tapir for a snack.

But humans?
Do we merely take for the sake of taking?
Has killing for us become just killing?
Perhaps we no longer have the luxury or right to look away…
extinction is around the corner.

An unusual and thoughtful write. Love your brilliant use of the English language to make your own unique style. As for the message, I am afraid that those of us who read your work already agree with you. Wish the message could get out to the people who most need to pay attention.

This dazzler is worth the price admission just for its originality.
Each line sizzles with terms not to be found in your online poet’s guide from “yin yang love” to “easy peasy” to “clifficide.”
Your entertaining language still does not obscure the story line, nor
the generous finish which carries just a caution. C’est magnifique.

As your piece of prosetry suggests, humans too often forget from where they came. It could be argued that we are so narcissistic that we strut about the planet as if some biblical doctrine suggesting man as the power and blessed to “rule” is the end all. Uh uh. Common sense dictates that, like the animals you portray, plant and animal reality beneath us is there not “simply” for the taking. Unfortunately, many have lost their way, whether religious or atheist, in that they have little conscience when it comes to considering the ways and means we “endorse” the taking of another living thing’s life. There are rights, and there are rights. Indeed, one is left, after reading your piece, with the question of what price is to be paid for conscience unabated? There are rights, and there are tights. Lest we forget, time is running short to do some serious study into what your title means: Anima Mundi. I for one believe, it’s never too late to alter individual convictions. Bravo!

Those that instigate killing and set in motion will always survive.

I have heard that the Ringling Brothers’ have said this about the elephants before. I truly hope they are sincere this time. As far as we humans, and whether or not we become extinct I don't know, but I do see much more killing and much more blood before we can honestly sit down with our former enemies and truly shake hands for the peace we deserve.
