I like those original lines like, "peel the enamel off your teeth." While I sensed a bit of ironic real life experience with thin walls, I didn't find this one creating laughter down the halls.
What might've been more excruciating had that hearing gone amok, would be the screeching of fingernails on the chalkboard, heard three classrooms down.

There was a heavy plastic divider that was pulled between the two halves of the room. I found it very difficult to teach my class with the other guy booming his lecture on the other side of that so-called soundproof curtain.
