Ernie said Roscoe you reckon we can find,
More gold up here than in your mine,

Yeah, I know of a shaft, the old timers were makin,
It’s just off the road and open for the takin,

Hey looka here now, It’s a deep black hole,
looks like the shaft that they dug for gold,

How deep you reckon this shaft might be,
Just drop in a rock and then count to three,

If the sides are straight and the rock falls free,
And you hear it hit before you get to three,

Then the shaft ain’t really that deep you see,
Roscoe buddy not deep to thee,
But any kinda deep is too deep for me,

Four rocks dropped and they hadn’t heard a sound
Gotta get somethin big, bottom’s too far down,

There’s a railroad tie that’s layin pretty near,
It’ll sure make a noise when we drop it in here,

And into the hole that timber they threw,
Then outta that shaft a dust cloud blew,

They stood in awe as it went down,
But Dang it all there’s still no sound ,

Suddenly a beller and it was stunning,!
From outta the brush a goat came running,

Faster than any that they’d ever seen
And jumped in the shaft with a parting scream,

Shocked and speechless, they walked away,
God what happened was all they could say,

Tried to jump that hole kinda looked to me,
Craziest thing that I ever did see,

Then they meet Miner Jake, he’s lookin for his goat,
They told their story and asked the color of his coat,

They identified him perfect but to their surprise
Jake said Naw fellers ,better check your eyes,

Couldn’t a been my goat, that you saw die,
Mine’s tied off, to a railroad tie,
