The Parrot
Ol’man Cooley always wanted, a parrot for a pet,
He bought one from Powers the local animal vet,
Cooley didn’t like the price, a fifty dollar deal,
Powers insisted , No , at that he’s really quite a steal,
He’ll be some one to talk to on that lonely mining Claim,
Since you ‘ve lost your partner Bert, Give the bird that name,
He speaks all that mining stuff with all the cuss words too,
You’ll never know the difference,he always wants to argue,
Ol’ Cooley now was now quite happy. That Bert was quite a Bird’
Then suddenly Bert quit talking, he wouldn’t say a word,
Powers said his beaks too long, it needs a trimming bit,
It takes a costly operation , I’ve got the tools to do it,
At seventy five new Lincolns, Ol’Cooley cussed a streak,
That’s highway robbery Powers, I can trim ol’Berty’s beak,
Powers said , you take too much and Bert will bleed and die,
Ol’Cooley said , I’m quite a hand at ,fixin things, I’ll give this a try,
I’ll just go back to my claim, your price is way too high,
Two weeks later ol’ Cooley came , Boy he was lookin sad,
Powers saw him on the street , he knew the news was bad,
Yeah ol’Berty’s gone , I Planted him, the poor ol’bird was dead,
Just like a dumb Gold miner, wouldn’t listen to what I said,
I bet he went and bled to death, you wouldn’t take my advise,
No , ol’Bert was dead ,when I took his head, --out of my shop vise!

Love ya!
Jane
In my sophomore year of college I took a quarter course in Machine Shop. I really enjoyed it because our classroom had the latest, two-year-old machines that were really fun to play with. Our project that quarter was to make a vice. I used that vice many times in the following years but never had a need to hold a bird's head while I sharpened its beak! ;-)
