Was it a real Rest Home visit--you know where I'm concerned the truth is hard to come by.

Rest Home Visit# 2

Went back to the rest home to visit my old friend,
His complaints of staying there were without end,

Said his wife came to visit but she watched TV,
She’s a horse lover nut. Didn’t come to see me,

Turned off her hearing aids. Damn that wasn’t nice,
Said, now she could enjoy the horse’s, without my keen advice,

She’s been my trouble ever since we met,
Never should’a married late , don’t know what you get,

Her tattooed arm was my biggest ever No No,
She asked what I thought about her lovely tattoo photo,

I couldn’t say for sure, but I thought I might risk it,
Said , it looks like a racing photo of ol’Seabiscuit,

You talk about trouble , man I bought the farm,
That used to be an image of her baby on her arm,

I guess her old eyesight ain’t what it used to be,
But I’ll swear it looked like a racing horse to me,

This brought me more trouble ,but that’s a few years ago,
I am still living, though things a little slow,

Every day is gittin better, they all ask what I’d prefer,
I make my own decisions , just can’t remember what they were,

If you came to make me feel better, I wish you could stay,
The rest room’s down the hall here, just a little way,

Damn things gotta lock, with buttons you gotta press,
That’s Ok , if you ain’t in a hurry to undress ,

Some kinda problem , don’t know what it is,
They don’t want visitors stopping there to take a whizz,

Gotta use the code if you be wanting, to get in,
Have a hell of a time gittin out of, my pretends,

Time is kinda short when urgency demands,
Especially in a hurry you gotta use both hands,

Hey Harve, I brought your dog, ,said they’ed let him in,
Thought you might just enjoy seeing him once again,

They let me use that rest room, the one you’re talkin about,
Doc’s got me on water pills, So I’m seldom gittin out,

The sign said , please don’t pee upon the floor,
Old hound dog he, obliged and watered down the door,

Been a great visit Harvey glad to see that you’re ok,
Would stick around but they won’t let me stay,

I’m gonna make that yard sale, this home has each year,
You cain’t beat the prices , no one’s close to here,

Top of the line in quality , they only sell the very best,
Everyone agrees , they’re far better than the rest,

Cosmetics , electric razors, hearing aids and dentures, ,I wanna pay the very least
And some very wealthy folks leave everything in here before they Rest in Peace

Playful, pitiful and precise. Certainly lost on the young ones. I appreciate the mix in here, tossed salad of truths dressed up in bravery. My favorite line is: “Every day is gittin better, they all ask what I’d prefer/I make my own decisions , just can’t remember what they were,” Great adventure, this one. ~~ djl

I didn't laugh… I cringed at the thought of buying used old peoples' stuff at a yard sale after they die. "I'll take five of those toothbrushes. Presents for my nephews. Can't pass up a bargain like that… A half dozen for 50¢. Guess that I will have to use that spare one for myself."

Once a horse lover, always a horse lover. No way to gettin' in between. The last person that "bought the farm," went off to the mythical meadow and out to pasture for a long while.

An external catheter solves the problem of the "runs" very well. But it Depends on what kind of runs old codgers are having. ;-)

Your adept use of different inter-merging points of view/speakers in this poem stands out as something remarkable: on your take on the epithet "rest" in homes which (according to the overall satirical intent) are far from what they are supposed to be as the last couplet amply testifies. In between, you manage to squeeze in and lampoon the tell-tale preoccupation of oldies with fumbling fingers: the Russian poupée of "rest room" in the Rest Home, the "ante-chamber" to the au-delà. You are born to inherit without being trained to be Voltaire and Jonathan Swift's heir: in miniscule capsules you manage to do what even the masters struggle in chapters or long episodes. (Well, maybe I'm exaggerationg here a bit!)
Better be advised that "humour", for you, is only a vehicle for the larger purpose of scathing revelations on your part on the hideous preposterousness of holy "human nature" and the eye-wash of human achievement. Bravo! Tom. Who would have thought it possible that an aero-space engineer, guitar-strumming "country" performer and Western "script" writer has to slog along in the depths of the Net in the Land of Opportunities???
