Big Red, my power chair
can take me almost everywhere
It takes me out to the garden plots
so I can breathe a bit of fresh air
Yesterday seemed sunny after the rain
so I put on old clothes - warm socks
when skies opened and rain poured through
Nature often laughs and mocks
My knees are arthritic clots of bone
and the rain sent down its best pour
Red and I scurried for nonexistent cover
my knees plainly told me they were sore
My upper parts were nice and dry but my poor knees began to sneeze!
I headed for the heat of the bedroom warm
but those old knees had muscle seize
No more garden pots unless the sun is out
But quick sneaks to gather tomatoes is in
People marvel at my skill to make things grow
But you lose a bout for every one you win

I know exactly what you mean. My legs spasm. It is exactly like a sneeze that comes on suddenly without my knowing it. But my back sometimes sneezes and nearly throws me out of my power chair in a great convulsion while I try to hang on for dear life. If I'm thrown out of the chair there is no getting back. As far as I know, I have no arthritis like you but I do have nasty paralysis where although my muscles seem strong, my brain can no longer command them to do its bidding.
My partner is like you, with a very green thumb. But she has great losses that she makes up for by just planting more and trying again. Gardening takes perseverance and sometimes, trial and error. It is hard for me to go outside except for a small deck where I get some sun every day if the clouds permit. But I see many of the fruit and flowers through large windows that we have. And the bonus birds, critters and insects. All four seasons although not very pronounced.
