Poem Artwork

My Time

By: Felix L. Perry

Give my old clothes to the Sally Ann

My guitar to old Railroad Sam

The bank can take back my pickup

And I’ll leave this world the way I am

All my organs they are up for grabs

Well any of them that still survive

The blind may see or the deaf may hear

I may be more good dead than alive

My beloved grandkids carry on my blood

The blood my own Daddy gave to me

I spelled a lot throughout the years

That’s just the way it used to be

Let the books I wrote be past to others

Read by generations to come

My poetry may warm the lonely heart

Or bring smile to one that’s glum

And don’t hold for me a fancy funeral

With hypocrites that I don’t know

No raise a toast and share some laughter

When it’s finally time for me to go

Then lay my ashes in unhallowed ground

Where the cold winter winds will pass

A scrap of tin to bear my name and

Etched “Mr. Taxman kiss my ass…”

Fee... I would have missed this if it hadn't been on the "left side of my screen"....duh... no emails for those I track lately...sorry... but glad I found this one.. It's perfect! Sad but true...and now I know why some of us are spiritual friends too... our minds travel in the same ways...amazing, don't you think? Love it... especially the last line! I'm doing alot of this myself...I'd like to find one of those old Christmas cookie tins....the pretty ones....for my ashes... or something like that... and I want a good ole Texas BBQ for the memorial...lots of laughing and singing, and some drinkin...and loud music.... Then... just have the kids dump the can later... maybe on 4th of July.... let it just go...blow in the wind.... Wonderful write... I loved it alot....and plan to keep it in my special file...

Your last line has given me the chuckle!...though it wasn't a laughing matter.

Honestly...what we worked for and gained in our lifetime, we cannot take it with us when we leave. Sad indeed!!!

But then again, wherever we will be going we probably won't need all that stuff we have in this world. So better go out as we come in, except gaining to clothes on our backs.

A thought-provoking piece, Fee!!!

"or I'll come back to BITE'YA!!!" Yes, I like this, Pops. After all the appropriate sobriety of the past few days, I too have been finding humour in death today... well, not really; it's just that I walked past a funeral parlour on the high street earlier on and it was decorated with poppies a la saison... it's banner headline over the top was to the effect of "How to take care of all your funeral arrangements", and I thought to myself: "Yeah, right... go to war... that'll for sure take care of ALL of 'em!" I like this cock-a-snoop at the old Grim Reaper... the taxman, I'm on about! :)) xx

The truth is Fee, we all know, you can't take it with you when you go...so you might as well have a good time and leave a trail of remembrance while you go. Nice write.

Cheers,
Dan

LOL at the ending. That's why I like an Irish funeral. Everybody acts the same as when you were alive. Be gora he was one pain in the ass but let's drink a toast that we've seen of him the last.

And don’t hold for me a fancy funeral,
With hypocrites that I don’t know;
No, raise a toast and share some laughter,

A sentiment, I truly share with you;
Some laughs, and a hardy toast or two.
