And shock lights around corners
ring alarms of indifference
and the tunnel bores into the horizon.

Casually connected through regret
and impasse and premise.
Fear is a brand on weathered hide.

Playground for what might-have-been
and just an inch more to the right,
sharing the apathy mistaken for pride.

Seeing that which has no presence
yet occupies all in subtext.
Turning on the effort for effect.

Finishing a tale never told
and recalling the instant it was futile.
Breath steaming behind in bosium strips.

And a destination like a heartache
swallows emptiness in disregard
and passes into anonymity.
