This poem is dedicated to Michael D. Schafer. The funniest poet I know.

Poem Artwork

I love to go to the grocery and talk to the hired help.
Every time I check out the cashier ask me if I want paper or plastic?
My answer is "Well I am going to give you plastic so please give me plastic too."

Then the bagger proceeds to take out my cart and I always ask, "Can you tell me where I parked?"
I always get a different answer and the best one was "Yes, you parked in our parking lot!"

Then as we proceed to go out I ask them, "Where is your GPS?."
Then I add, "How are we going to find our way through this mess?"
They usually laugh and I finally take them to my car.

As we unpack the groceries I ask them, "What do you really want to be?" Then we talk about being "Wanna-bee's"
Then I tell them that I used to bag groceries back in the stone age to earn money for college tuition.
Now I am a retired USAF Major, who still works as a professor in a local college.

They usually smile and walk away. Then when I come back we sometimes continue our conversation. I have helped convince a few to go to college that way!

Amen! Hurray!

Sounds as if you have fun at the grocery store. I'm going to have to try that. I did use part of a conversation with a clerk at Trader Joes.

GOD IS USING YOU, JOHN, IN A WAY THAT IS UNIQUE AS PER YOUR EXPERIENCES IN LIFE. NOTHING EVER JUST 'HAPPENS' IN OUR LIFE...THERE'S ALWAYS A REASON THAT GOD ALLOWS IT. MAY YOU CONTINUE TO BLESS AND TOUCH LIVES WHILE SHOPPING, AS YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY CALLED TO DO. BLESSINGS TO YOU AND THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING. LOVE AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

When I announced I would be an English major others would comment, "You want fries with that?" I became one anyway.

It may takes a Michael to know a Michael,
but I have to agree that Michael D Schafer writing
can get some of us laughing!

My nephew, Michael, paid for his college by working at a local grocery store. He was just made a Sgt. in the Army Reserve. I wonder if he had to put up with old codgers telling stupid jokes like that. ;-)

With an arrangement from the local store manager, I would fill my cart with a week's groceries, using it as a walker to keep me on my feet to the checkout. And then, I would commandeer a bagger and take him/her home with me to carry the bags and unpack them while my little Pomeranian buddy danced all around to see what was cooking. And then the three of us would drive back to the grocery store where I would give the beggar a healthy tip and my buddy who had been sitting on his/her lap enjoying the ride, would suddenly turn and viciously attack the good youth who just held him in the lap--go figure. They loved that dog anyway.

At our age, getting lucky means finding our car in the parking lot.
As Capt. Kirk once said, "Everybody, remember where we parked".
John, thanks for the dedication, and keep up those conversations.
