Sorry if this author react with irreverence, but lets tell the truth, the people around us, those Nintendo and Wii generation think that a book is a box full of words to trick them...

Poem Artwork

In response to Bobbi Ann Duffy's challenge.

I told my 5 years old granddaughter
“I am a poet”
she looked at me with enormous eyes
like I was coming from another planet,
or hoping it wasn’t something bad
she seemed like ready to start to cry,
“no…no…no” I said,
“it’s nothing bad,”
and trying to fend her tears I added,
“its’ something I write…”
but she turned around
and ran to her mother
with a look that said
“I am scared to dead”.

Then, I told my 18 years old grandson
“I am a poet”
trying to get a little of his attention
maybe stir curiosity
for some of what I mused,
and forget for a minute
all the pretty girls
and that horrible noise
that for music they confuse,
realizing by his glazed stare
that he hadn’t
the foggiest idea of what it means
to be a poet
and that his grandfather,
in his older days,
seems to be living…in another planet.

I waited until everybody
in the family was sitting
around the supper table to announce…
“I am a poet,”
which forced my oldest daughter
to look at me like I “was”
really from another planet…
while thinking that maybe
I was going bananas
sorrowful my oldest son
was shaking his head:
the rest of the clan
by reading their faces
took it as a clue
to choke on their bread,
like all of a sudden
I was some kind of a nut
and not a…POET!!!!!!!!

An honest, real, and delightful "take" on being a "poet," Georg. I enjoyed this very much. I don't have any grand kids to test this idea on them. My own kids already know that I am "nuts." LOL!!! Love and peace to you,

There is hope... I see it when I read the poems that my 7 year old writes. He LOVES poetry and is constantly making up nonsense poems and rhymes. Until then...your poem reminds me that humor still is alive and well within the poetic realms of Georg Mateos' writes.

It is a sad reality Edvard. None of my family even cares about reading. Nor can the majority of them begin to comprehend the role of a poet in this age of dumbed down automotons.

I fear that the form is dying (but thankfully not yet dead) with the younger generations. Clearly defined insights.

Very funny, Georg. I tell my kids that I'm a writer and they say, "congratulations, dad." I ask if they read my book and they say, "I will when I have the time." Then, after a year or two, I just let it go. Although my son wanted to make sure whatever may come from the book after I've gone to where old writers, and poets eventually go is covered in my trust.
Very funny, and truthful read, Georg.

Well Georg, we all appreciate your poetry and wit, of course we do, because as Jude said, Poet-nuts are a strange but interesting brew!
I agree with him and just know that it would never be the same here without you...
Peace, love, and light,

Dear Georg,
The truth is, what makes a writer.
If it rhymes it makes us "brighter"
Being a Poet is not my aim
I write because I feel the flame
Thank you for this lovely poem. Love Emile

This is great Georg! How well it shows how little the poet is esteemed in today's society. The only one who recognize us is ourselves;-)...Excellent entry for challenge, Bard Mateos!...ET

It does so often seem to be a dying art but whenever I see a young person sign up on our den I go out of my way to make them welcome and encourage them for they are the wave of our future and the future of poetry..

Oh my Georg how well you've written about this. My family reacts in the same way. When my first book was published I kept it a secret until I had copies. I handed my grown daughter one and she said, "That's nice Mom" and then put the book down and continued with her meal. As far as I know she's never looked inside the cover. It's okay I don't write for anyone except myself.
Hugs to you my friend,
Marcia

But isn't a poet a bit of nut?
Very good poem. And I don't like it because it tells about things that are hutrtful to me too. Yes, we are crancy in the eyes of our dearest and poets in eyes of others. Funny situation.

Georg I liked reading your challenge.
Yes one could envision all of your descriptions sitting around the round table. Good luck they will learn to love it sooner or later.
Smile, they probably read everything you write.

Take care,

Darn, I had you all wrong, you mean you actually live here, what about all that otherworldly stuff you write, like say romance, and quirky humour, or maybe it's just that I as a more earthy person can't relate very well ha ha ha, Georg this one really got to me for I could picture exactly what you were saying, and the reaction you described just all too real, I myself would'nt dare do what you just did, for I be laughed out of town, there might even be some crying.
I do all my writing in secret, no one knows, and that's the way I'm going to keep it ha. Your the best my friend! Hugs! Jasmin Horst

Some people think that we, the poets, constantly live in dreams. Little do they know that the things we say and write would sometimes save the world and its people from their misery.
