Reminiscing about those nights I walked home alone from setting bowling pins on cold below zero winter nights. Especially, one night of a glorious display of multicolored Aurora Borealis. I have learned so much about our existence, so simple to me then, bundling up against the cold, listening to my heels echo hitting the hard pavement looking forward to reaching my parent's warm home. Something I miss and can no longer do.

Winter Night

On a cold, crisp, clear winter's night,

stars seem to be bigger, more bright,

against black velvet horizon to horizon sight.

Frosty breath the only thing moving,

peace reflected in distant animal calls,

warmth belying the deadly cold looming.

It is then, knowing the cold air we breathe,

is but a very thin supply that recycles within,

moving around the globe from hemispheres,

changing the weather we depend on to win.

Our war against nature we've fought so well,

warm boots and coats keeping us so snug,

arriving at warm houses, our loved ones to hug.

The surface of our planet is thin, as well,

it's all we have to nourish and shelter us,

our own man-made heaven or hell.

It is times like this, walking home in deep night,

one contemplates incomprehensible vastness,

that lies beyond our still feeble, unaided eyesight.

Violent beginnings of all those stars in the sky,

coalescing of gravity creating everything on high.

Elements made of exploding stars gracing our earth.

Meteors, pulsars, supernovas and black holes,

the vast universe we are a part of makes the rules.

All seems at peace on this night's pleasant walk.

But the turmoil is there in that distance above,

and even right here on our frozen landscape,

we must treasure it with stewardship and love.

It is here, each alone, we contemplate to flee or fight.

Thankful for each and every, cold clear night.

THANK YOU, RON...INDEED, IT IS ON SUCH A CLEAR WINTER NIGHT THAT WE CAN SEE 'HIM' SO CLEARLY. FOR, IN THE MIDST OF ALL THAT IS SO VERY WRONG WITH THIS DECAYING EARTH....HIS. LOVE AND THE PROMISE OF A ETERNAL DAY IS SEEN SO CLEARLY.

Beautiful words, Ron, and a reminder that beauty is not always a warm and fuzzy safe thing that we can control. Bravo!

Nothing like being out in the silent, cold night with one's thoughts, renewing perspective on the vast universe.

Bonnes Fêtes, Ron and to ALL who might chance upon this missive. This is one of your most successful attempts at poetizing your feelings. The lyrical tone encompassing and underlying several themes which lay intertwined on the surface of your setting: the clear "winter night", without the "pretence" of philosophizing on the ethereal creation of the universe taking over and simplifying your principal personal image of longing for "home" - "arriving at warm houses, our loved ones to hug" - and the wonder of ever-violently toiling Nature (the microcosmic and the macrocosmic levels boundup here seamlessly, with the struggling climate change theme hinted at the furnace-ing under the surface: "it's all we have to nourish and shelter us" - not distracting and dampening the personal biographical detail in your "introductory" words - all coalescing to produce an effect of empathy for the poet in you yearning to manifest a rather willful feeling of "sharing" with others a moment of respite at a time of year with its own connotations of spirituality whether you partake in it/them or not in "les tréfonds de votre coeur" (I'm in two minds about this attitude, knowing what I know of your life-positions). In actual fact, what I wish to draw attention to here is/are your poetic skills - not the sentiments, nor the purported philosophizing - the use of couplets, tercets and the quatrain and having un-patterned rhyme schemes to buoy them that I have not seen undertaken before by you - devices all at the service (not interpolating) of perhaps just a longing for "home" at your parents' place. Who wouldn't empathize with you, Ron. At least, at the moment. We'll all gladly drink a "cup of cheer" in your name! Every good wish. Wignesan

Reading your words is the cherry on top of my Winter Solstice, Ron! You remind me of how much I love winter evenings and cuddling up with a snuggly blanket as well. Write on, hon!!

This is not my most favorite season as you know, cold weather and the Christmas Holidays. But your poem is lovely, warm and wonderful. So I had to tell you dear Ron. Happy Holidays to you and your family. Be well...

I love the cold, nights, days or whenever, I love to hunker down and read a book, just keep away from all those that have be merry. No money do I have to buy presents, no time do I have to enjoy other people, I am just as happy to stay home and read, write, listen or sleep...good night to the holidays & to you, Ron...-e-

Beautiful, beautiful words put to well placed rhyme, my friend... Coming from Chicago I so well remember frigid cold nights, although I did my best to stay indoors. I remember one night, maybe I was nineteen at the time, while on my father's small sailboat on Lake Michigan about a mile from shore, for the first and only time in my life, why then and why at that time I have no idea, but I saw the Aurora Borealis... Truly a beautiful sight to see.
