Industry, feeding the desires of our insatiable consumption, has done great damage to our earth, our home without paying for long-term consequences. We buy their products.

Out of Sight's Mind

Out of sight, out of mind,

keep the ugly out behind,

sweep it nicely under the rug,

smile and give preferred a hug.

Dilution is the easy solution,

for all of our ugly waste,

cast it higher and further,

to some other place.

Or abandon it altogether,

when low hanging fruit is all picked,

disappearing into the city's money,

leaving the countryside totally tricked.

For prosperity is a two-edge sword,

one cuts the finest and takes it home,

while leaving the place of former riches,

savagely stripped bare to the bone.

We can no longer sweep transgression,

under centuries of filthy decrepit rug,

we must find a way to make amends,

no longer only shirk, smile or shrug.

For things should no longer be,

"the way they have always been."

Injustice has always been injustice,

the time to change has come.

A time to give up childish trivial things,

do the right thing for our only earth,

for how can we reach for the stars,

if we spoil our nest, our place of birth.

BASICALLY, HUMANITY IS SELFISH. THEY JUST DON'T TAKE THE TIME TO SEE THE LARGER PICTURE. IT'S ALL ABOUT ME AND MINE. THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN TELL ME THAT WHEN ONE DECIDES TO TOSS A PIECE OF PLASTIC OR THE LIKES THEY ARE CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT THOUSANDS OF OTHER PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD ARE PROBABLY DOING THE SAME THING. I DON'T THINK THERE IS ONE OF US WHO HAVEN'T LOOKED AT A PICTURE, VIDEO OR MOVIE AND SEEN THE DESTRUCTION THAT IS BEING DONE TO NATURE IN THE SEA, ON THE LAND AND IN THE AIR BECAUSE OF THIS LACK OF RESPONSIBILITY. WILD LIFE IS EVERYWHERE AND THEY ALL EAT THIS DISCARDED JUNK OR GET ENTANGLED IN IT. THESE MASS UNCARING, CARELESS ACTS HAVE GOT TO CEASE! AND I DO BELIEVE THE ONLY WAY TO DO IT IS TO MAKE LAWS THAT IMPOSE HUGE FINES AND JAIL TIME ON THOSE THAT ARE CAUGHT BREAKING THEM. HOW TO CATCH EM? THEY SET-UP HIDDEN CAMERAS AND DRONES EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD WELL THEY NEED TO ZERO IN ON THE AREAS THAT ARE RECEIVING THE MOST DEPOSITS OF THIS 'JUNK' AND HAVE HUMAN MONITORS THAT 'CATCH EM IN THE ACT'. AND ALSO SET UP A SPECIAL ENVIRONMENTAL TASK FORCE THAT IS TRAINED TO PATROL AND DO THIS JOB. I MEAN THERE HAS GOT TO BE A WAY BECAUSE IT'S NOT FAIR TO THOSE DEFENSELESS CREATURES WHO WIND UP PAYING THE ULTIMATE PRICE FOR HUMANITY'S LACK OF RESPONSIBLE-LOVE. GOOD ONE RON, THANKS FOR THE SHARE. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH.... HIS+INSPIRATIONS

It is tragically sad how Earthians seem intent upon destroying their homes. I prefer to think I am a Human (humane comes to mind) and I have always cared deeply for nature and the environment. I spent years fighting the oil companies here for blatant polluting of local streams. At last, they were fined one million dollars each. What a joke! However, the silver lining is that they were forced to install filtration systems to take care of the run-off from their parking lots. All the best, Ron.

People have always littered. That's how archaeologists learn history. But it's only in recent history that we've been able to create and discard substances that are not biodegradable and that pollute our planet. Honestly, are we really evolving here?

I always pick up trash from the beach when I am there. You know all the junk left in or near my ocean certainly gives me a scare, this poem scares me even more...-e-

Sooner or later mother earth will give us one loud roar! Unfortunately, the young ones nowadays aren't taught right and wrong, and they don't care to litter all over the place.

If we were able to reach the stars, we would probably pollute them as well. Isn't nearby outer space (perhaps inner space) littered now with satellites of all sorts, some functional, others non-functionable and abandoned as space litter. I guess we never learn. Fine poem as the others have attested.

Our launch pad to the stars may also be underwater with a thickness of plastic that will make harvesting what fish are left well near impossible, short of deep diving apparatuses. Very sad. Your poem is very timely, given such threats have been all but forgotten in the past few months. Meanwhile, the plastic waste continues. Very well written, Ron. covering so many aspects of the crisis.

Excellent write. No punches pull here, you laid out the cold hard truth. Humans are despicable. Once a week I go on litter patro around my neighborhood. It's truly amazing the amount of trash I pick up each week. People are disgusting, and there are plenty of times that I'm just flat out embarrassed to be a member of the human race.
