Christmas Morning Smiles

Greeting the children on Christmas morning after a late, late Christmas Eve could be the biggest challenge of the year.

        Christmas Morning  S    M      I     L     E      S

Poor Mom and Dad awaken sad,
Pry open s l e e p y eyes;
That Billy and Sue can sleep no more
comes not as a surprise.

"Give us just ten more minutes, then
we'll wash, and we'll get dressed."
"Get up  n o w, Get up!"  the children beg,
 "U  P  from your cozy nest!"

Dear Dad and Mom, with great aplomb,
practice their weary smiles;
They stayed up till  t w o  assembling toys
and stacking them in piles.

"Oh, well,"  they sigh, "Can't be denied,
It's always been this way."
There's no sleeping in, so put on a grin --
It's a Merry Christmas Day!

Great poem, Connie! I remember those times well. Once my husband went to sleep on the floor near the tree after only assembling half of a bicycle (I had already gone to bed) and when the kids got up at 4:30AM there he was still asleep on the floor!
