Icy Winter

We have been experiencing some cold weather here, down as low as 19 degrees at night.

Icy Winter

The icy chill of winter
Sneaks in through cracks around the door
Chills the walls, pillows, and bed linens
And refrigerates the tile and wooden floors.

Faucets drip to prevent icing in water pipes
The heater runs continuously until afternoon
Outside the prickly winds scrape your face and nose
So you pray the bright sun warms things up soon.

No children are seen playing in the street
All the animals and pets are kept indoors
Families bundle up together inside
Neglecting most of the outside chores.

There’s nothing like sweet hot chocolate
On a chilly day that’s heater-warmed inside
With popcorn or cookies or snacks galore
And families gathered together to ease the wintry tide.

Oh, what a wonderful sharing of the challenges and social comforts of an "Icy Winter" with the bold and vivid images that can only spring forth from one who knows.

I loved it when you followed your recounting of the difficulties of a hard winter with the strengthening and growth of close relationships when families bundle together sharing snacks and sweet hot chocolate.

A great write, Jeanette!

Great poem, We also felt the frigid chill of Jan here in Punta Gorda. Our thermometer was 22 above , which is cold for here.. I hope the cold has gone for the rest of the year! Its been a different kind of winter this year and I'm sure some of it is due to global warming..Congrats on your new book...Love, M

I am SO there, lol. I am a weirdo and love winter, so this was right up my alley. The imagery you chose was just perfect. The best part about getting cold is the warming up after.

Wonderful write, Jeanette; well done!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :D

Try to stay warm! (Personally, I don't mind the cold; I can handle the cold a lot better than the hot summers we have here in Texas! :) )

A good chunk of the country has felt the bite of Winter: our low yesterday morning was 8. In Texas. 11 this morning. IN TEXAS! LOL Up to 30 now, wheee! Heat wave! May have to break out the shorts ... NOT! You paint a vivid scene many of us are feeling: is it Spring, yet? Well done, Jeanette!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Karen and I were just talking about you, wondering where you've been ... glad you're okay. =]
