“Without birds, where would we have learned that there can be song in the heart?”
― Hal Borland

Poem Artwork

The strident, staccato beeping
Of the alarm clock
Too near to my ear
Awakens me in the predawn hours
From the sweetest dream,
And I am not
A morning person.
As I lay there grumpily
In the dark,
Cursing the need
To rise so early,
I become aware
Of Nature's music
Coming from the woods
Behind my house.
The birds are already awake
And singing joyfully
As the new day approaches.
From the overgrown azalea bush
On the other side
Of the bedroom window
I hear the muted cheeping
Of a nest of
Hungry chicks
And I am struck
By the beauty that had begun
While I slept.
As I lay in the darkness
My mood morphs
From grouchy resignation
To one of peaceful
Anticipation.
How can a day
That begins with
Such simple pleasure
Be the same one I'd dreaded
Just moments ago?

How beautiful and heart touching. We need their songs so much.

So natural your poetic ode to how the birds can change our attitude simply by hearing them and their joyful sounds.

Unfortunately, there are many dangers lurking for birds, like my large windows on the back of my house, that are decimating birds today. The future of birds, who survived the dinosaur extinction, may be on the path towards extinction, as well. Birds, butterflies and bees all need our help. We need them more than ever and are complicated busy lives going nowhere.

My hearing loss has reached a point where I'm having trouble hearing them.

Thank you for reminding us…

Ron

Love it and love the warmth such a natural occurance as birds singing outside our windows can bring to us. Spring has finally arrived here in Nova Scotia and as we have a large back yard with lots of huge trees, shrubs and bushes the birds tend to congregate here a lot. Besides nesting in the eaves of our sheds I found three nests from last year when the leafs were off the trees. Beautiful write my friend...

Amazing how much joy there is in life when you appreciate the simple joys in life. Well written and I wish you the best of days!
