Hello Little Fledgling
Is this your day to fly?
You watch me from
The fresh mown grass
With a chary eye.
No need to worry, little bird,
For I'm not the threat you see,
But just in case a cat should come
Close by here I will be.
You're such a little songbird
Brand new to this big world
Very soon you'll take your place
Once your wings unfurl.
Until then, little friend, take heart,
You've such a life to live
Growing up, you'll find a perch,
Your song to us you'll give.
Thank you for reminding me of a part of my earlier life where I saw many young robins out of the nest, but not on their own fully, waiting in the grass for mama or daddy to come and feed them a worm. Or show them how to get one on their own.
It is when they are at their most vulnerable and so many don't make it into that adult life of courtship, mating, nesting, egg warming, fledgling, feeding and protecting… before migrating to a better place for winter before returning to the same place to the same mate for another season of having chicks in the cycle of life.
Such a sweet poem on behalf of such a sweet little bird. A gentle and heart-felt reflection on the vulnerability and promise of all young things in this world.
