... you were too young to understand ...

Poem Artwork

... tried to make it Christmas for you, but
mine was unwrapped in the announcement
Daddy wanted a divorce.  You were too
young to understand the tears running down

Mommy's face or the pain on Daddy's, of
having to pretend everything was normal
when the tinsel was tarnished and the lights
blurred by sadness; the present couldn't undo

the hurts of the past.  Perhaps it was better
this way.  For whom?  Not for us, but we
tried to make it the best Christmas you ever
had:  it was the last thing we could give ...

the lament overflows your poem -- what a catch twenty-one situation if ever there was one -- celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and having your parents announce they could no longer remain together -- peace and love to you my friend -- JMW

The idea in this poem is really sad; yet, it happens all over the country every year. Thank God for that one parent who tries to carry on and make Christmas a good one for the children. A good write...

Karla,
Several key people in my life keep telling me to let the past alone. I can see I'm not the only one haunted. I think the past is hard to leave alone when there's no closure; or the memory is vivid, hurtful, or life-changing. A sad one. Love and Hugs,
Sheila

Karla,
You have the good habit of smacking me in the face, reality checks I badly need, we all need, and especially for the coming season.

I think that you find just the right words Karla, without overdoing it.
A few expressive details, a good picture and that little question "fro whom" that comes at the right time...
