... Body shivers with the dread of ....

Image (c) 2005, Karla Dorman

Poem Artwork

The first foray into the deeps always
the worst:  the tentative step in oh,
cold
water as it tastes feet, grabs at

ankles, nibbles its way up to knee,
thigh, crotch, waist:  can't do this,
can't.
The back twitches as the wet

creeps further up the spine; nipples
held back by a thin resolve of color
shrivel in protest.  Body shivers with

the dread of okay, now.  N o w.  On
three.  One.  Two still too --- O  N  E..
Two.  Threeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

OH that's cold.
Teeth are chattering,
skin turning blue and goosefleshed,
but doesn't that water feel ... g r e a t?

Not when it's cold! The way I got around it was to dive right in, that way there was a single shock all over and I had a little bit more time in the water before I had to get out.

JUST as this poem was GREAT!
That expectancy of JUMPING IN, and rushing forward and diving, is my pleasure!
This poem is Terrific Karla!
Sheila is right, when I meditate, we do start at our toes and work our way up slowwwwwwly and picture it happening... as RELAXATION takes over every part of my body and cells...
This poem is a keeper! for me to again savor! and I love the strong imageries you expressed so clearly! I could feel the CCCOLDness climbing UP!

WRITE ON!

lol...I would not go in that ocean. It's a pool or nothing for me. This poem reminds me of that relaxation technique for sleeping. Start at the toes and work your way up. Nicely penned, with a strong feel of realism. Love and Hugs,
Sheila

Here in the east I have learned to enjoy the ocean in all
its moods, but I hesitate to amuse the laughing gulls by
dipping my toe in the surf until the Sun tells me I won't
turn blue. Thanks for this, Karla. Today of all days I
needed a good laugh. -gene.

LOL. A wonderful write for sure Karla. I felt the icy cold of the water through you description and yes I agree that water feels great. Just one tiny suggestion. Add a question mark to the final statement.
It's so good to read you again. I'm sorry I've been so slack in my reviews. The time...time...time *sigh*

Much love out of L.A. ... Chanti
