The chain broke
I was lying in bed and it just
came apart
for countless moments of my life
that chain has bound us
our dreams, our love
securely around my neck
it's pendant dangling softly
between my breasts always
always a reminder of our happiness
but now it is broken
I sat up,
letting it slide off of my moonlit skin
and into my palm
a graceful tangle of hope
wrapped around and crossed over
a small portion of our soul.
Through showers and naps
car wrecks and ambulance rides
scrambling for my life up a cliff in the rain...
Through plane trips and bus station terminals
long lovelorn letters and bitter tears...
Through anger and hatred
love and joy...
That necklace has remained with me
not since the day it found a home
nestled against my bosom
has my neck been bare
but now it is broken.
You would hate the chain if you knew
you have a tendency to be that way
because you would see
that something that has helped connect us
has shown me that ties have to be severed
I knew it in my heart
but had not half the courage of that necklace
to be honest and say
"It's time to break it off, Love."
So by direct orders from this trinket
I must bid you goodbye.
We once loved unconditionally
but now that is broken as well.
