Animal Skins

My third poem from my week at camp. This one is a little more serious from the talk given us to appreciate nature around us.

They left their skins for us to see.
The fox and rabbit and squirrel gray.
Although they could not talk to us
their hides had much to say.

They were all different and much the same
as they show us how to live.
Each one in its special way
had so much to give.

Their fur was there to keep them warm
and at death they left them behind
so they could continue the task
of giving warmth to humankind.

Since progress has give us a lot of better alternatives to hold us warm, anymal skins serve only to keep vanity warm of small minded people which haven't a clue what to do with their money.

It is so sad that people have to destroy our innocent beauty. Thank you for sharing Larry.

Great poem. I love the line, "Although they could not talk to us their hides had much to say." As an old mountain hiker, I've been in some Forest Service buildings with mountain lions, bear and big horn sheep left behind like the animals your poem immortalizes.

Larry,

This is so sad and unfortunately so true. You've caught the sorrow of our creatures that cannot speak for themselves. Recenty, I've written two poems with the same theme. All I can say is, Why?

Mary
