Nature's Sorrowful Loss

the town had changed so much it just proves you can never really go home again.

Went back to visit my childhood home,
It had been so long, it was a small
town with trees abound, so quiet
you mostly heard the birds sing and
the animals play.  A small piece of heaven.

But when I went back to visit,
my hands flew to my mouth, what
on earth had happened, all the trees
were gone!  Replacing them were many
condominiums, the small town was
there no more.

I asked someone what went wrong, he
said a rich man bought the land and had
the trees cut down.   I wanted to slap him
when he said, those straggly trees are gone and this town has really hit it rich!

Nature had been destroyed at quite a lost.
Birds sang no more, many animals had died.

Tell, me, sir, I am confused;
was it really worth the cost?

Day by day this same scenario plays out in tranquil havens across our great land. Developers and politicians ruining our ecosystem and then telling us we need to protect it! Hypocrisy of the greatest magnitude. I am glad I am not the only one upset by this recurring nightmare. God bless. JMW

Hello Mary,
I feel the sadness from the empty loss of memories removed & now forever changed as you describe in your poem, and your last line really hits the home of my heart.

Not an easy thing to do visiting our childhood homes. Change is inevitable and usually not for the better. Well penned your shock and sadness. Well Done! Deborah

So very sad, and as I wander many of my favorite old childhood haunts these days, my heart is truly saddened at all the destruction we have brought to nature, supposedly in the name of 'progress.'

Mary, it's hard to go back to the towns of long ago. The lands are disappearing and being replaced by mass condo's & housing units. This reminded me of going back to my home town and everything had changed...I so wanted to cry. A nice write.

of course THEY could develop the land and leave SOME TREES and some green space, but like so much former wild land here in Florida THEY do not. THEY, are the big developers and also the big land holders whose only calculation in the transaction is dollars and cents, and out goes "common sense" But it is town councilman, who people elect that permit it... We should blame ourselves...
A good poem for the times...Michael Guy

So much farmland in PA HAS BEEN sold for condimium building too. It is a great profit making thing for farmers now. I miss the countryside too. Your poem said it all. Nothing stays the same as we grow up either. Sad but true.
