Life Giving Light
Minutes ticked by--
the verdict given-
my husband rushed from the room…
The look on his face
was one of concern,
and his love undeniable.
The last words I heard
were urgent, yet kind,
something about me needing blood…STAT!
but sleep faded all from my mind.
They say I nearly died that day,
at least two,
or maybe three times…
For five long hours
they worked over me…
trying to keep me alive
with a high pressure pump
and a blood brigade
bringing my heart sustenance--
Sixteen units of precious blood
were poured into my heart.
But I…
I only slept—
oblivious to it all.
And as I slept
peace filled my heart,
for I walked in realms of light--
I don’t recall if words were spoken…
but the feel of the light
and engulfing love
lingers on in my heart.
The light and the blood
that were given to me
gave me back my life.
And realization dawned within
when I felt His healing touch--
He’d given His blood for me…
I am sorry that you had to go through this, but then again, what a wonderful gift. I was an ER nurse for twenty years, about half of that in an inner-city knife and gun club. I once gave a guy 72 units of blood in a little over an hour, both in the ER and the OR because we couldn't find a perfusionist that night and I was manning the rapid infuser.
I always wondered what happened to the folks that we lost, for just a little bit, but in the ER, you get stabilized and then you're gone. Rarely did I get the opportunity to follow-up with anyone later but they were always on my mind.
I am thrilled that it worked out for you. God wasn't done with ya' yet, but I'm sure that you already figured that part out. Isn't it amazing how many people were involved in that life-saving event that you experienced? It is one thing for the doctors and nurses who are sweating bullets, but then you think about all those folks who marched themselves down to the Red Cross bloodmobiles, and all the people who had their hands on that precious material as they processed it. It is a miracle indeed.
And...so wonderful of you to share it with us in this tight little work that brings home the beauty of the universe and a glimpse of what is waiting out there for us.
You know that I think the world of you and your sister. I have never met either of you and likely never will, but that doesn't change the fact that you feel like friends - and that is a treasure all in itself.

Oh, that moment of realizing with new clarity the power of His blood!
How blessed we are when He shines the light into our souls to bring new life to beliefs that sometimes become a bit humdrum.
Thank you for sharing your heart!
