If you've ever had dts you can relate to this...if not...don't ever go there
Another damned bottle
Lying there
Taunting me
Yes…taunting me with its emptiness
Empty
Like my life/my wallet/my dreams
Looking at me
Sitting here in last week’s underwear
With last week’s beard
On my sunken cheeks
The bags under my eyes
Have reached new proportions
Stop it!
Don’t stare at me with those eyes
Eyes?
Do bottles have eyes?
Yes, those eyes
Blaming me
For the emptiness
Stop yelling
I can’t stand the noise
How can an empty bottle
Be so damned loud
Stop!
Stop the bleeding
You’re messing up my couch
Couch?
Floor?
You’re bleeding all over me
A damned empty bottle
Who would have thought
It could cut so deep
You’re ruining
My life
You’re bleeding my blood
How can
An empty bottle
Have so much
Blood?
powerful poem...I've not experienced from the same view as you...however, it is still torment on the person who shares the relationship weather it be a spouse or child, been there for both. You write it well and with truth.
This tugs at the heartstrings of all children or grown children, wifes and lovers of alcholholics. Though the pain you describe is great and my arms and heart go out to you, the victims, the true victims are the ones who never give up hoping that the drinkers will give it up and accept their love as a substitute.
"With last week's beard On my sunken cheeks"... blimey, Sue... things MUST have been bad!! Had a fit when I thought radiotherapy was giving me facial hair, but think I must have been hallucinating a bit. Not meaning to be tooo flip, but I know EXACTLY where you're coming from with these, having been born into a family of degrees of alcoholism - from the extreme to the "just need a drink at the end of the day"... you have painted the picture well and I just adore your imagery. From my own experience, it is a very fine line we tread between being "partial" and being "addicted" to the 7 o'clock tipple... and it is best to be VERY aware that one is not always strong enough to cope with the consequences. Powerful and compelling, thank you, Kate xx

You must have been to hell and back...so happy you're not there anymore..goodpice..should be posted on some pub..
Reminds me of the Picture Of Wine And Roses. Never had the dt's but remember staring at some empty beer bottles and watching the clock get to the hour when the stores would open. Alcoholo addiction can surely mess up more than one life.
