Being a writer really does necessitate having THICK skin. You hopefully submit...you get rejected...and its a continuous cycle. I never planned to get rich off my writing...and that's a damn good thing!!!! giggle ...I am touching hearts around the world...how amazing is that! Oh, I've had stories and poems published in print and online all over the place...and it cracks me up when someone decides to write a book and they ask me how to go about getting it published....I have at least ten books written and none of them have found a home yet....and it's been 13 years of research and rejection....next time someone asks...I'll email this poem...giggle....

Poem Artwork

Wear a helmet made of steel
So publishers’ barbs you do not feel!
Never overexpose your heart
They’ll stand in line to tear it apart!
Practice holding your breath a while
It’s smothering neath the deep slush pile!
Shoulder pads wouldn’t go astray
Rest assured you’ll need them one day!
Don’t get discouraged; don’t give up
Sometimes it only amounts to luck!
Protect your words; they belong to you
Follow your heart whatever you do!
And lastly the best advice I’ve got…
Believe in yourself no matter what!

I Don't wear a helmet
My head's hard as a rock
My heart is protected
By an emotional lock
My breathing is easy
Unless I am runnning
Won't fall for the publisher's
Guile and cunning
I can't be discouraged
A fact that can't be denied
Attempting to be published
I heve never even tried
I believe in myself
I think I write swell
But the cold hearted fact is
I'm lazy as hell

I like what you’ve said here, Annabel! You’ll welcome riches if it comes from your writing, but you are not setting mind on it. And so, you will no longer be disappointed by publishers; instead, be encouraged that you are a blessing to many readers everywhere

It's all about money. If a publisher thinks they can make money from your book, they will publish it. You can do what most of us have done, and that is use one of the many POD (print on demand) publishers out there. But don't expect that they will do any editing, formatting, promoting, or selling, your book. If you publish this way as I have, you will still have to edit, promote and sell your book. Beware of up selling offers that give you low price to start and then offer many more things at a higher cost with no benefit. Booklocker.com sued Amazon when it tried to take over all of POD publishing. I've been with them for thirteen years and have no complaints. Try writersweekly.com for the lowdown, get published and get copyrighted in Canada and the USA.

And good luck… We all need that too. Very few writers ever make a buck at it. BTW, poetry books don't sell. That's why my publisher refuses to publish them.

Anna, you do know that it took me twenty-six years to get "The Climbing Boy" published and, in the meantime (most of this time being before computers)I sent thousands of queries to thousands of agents and publishers all going out first class mail with a first class return envelope enclosed. Luckily, finally I was able to get all three books published (none self-published) but for all the good it's done me I probably haven't made enough to pay for all of the queries, envelopes and double postage.
Good, realistic poem, though.

I finally gave up on the New York publishers and started trying to attract publishers wherever they were. Nothing doing there either. Fifteen years later, I'm growing older by the day, I decided if I was ever going to hold a book I had written in my hands it would have to be self-publishing, and I haven't regretted it one bit, Lulu.com and I have a thing going on. Thirteen novels and one memoir later I'm still writing and publishing.
