Squirrel B’Gone!!

This is JJ. We adopted her on Wednesday from her kind hearted foster parents. She was the ward of a county shelter in central Missouri. She and her sister had been dumped and were found roadside in the middle of winter. She is a lab and we think, Border collie mix. As you know Border collies need a job and one of hers is squirrel patrol of the bird feeders on the deck. She loves it. Great deal for both of us, I was losing the battle. Our other two dogs are still debating.

Poem Artwork

Cheaper than bird seed I believe

This little ball of fire

We’ve got more time than money

Ever since I did retire

She sits and waits at the doorway

For the squirrels to make their run

They barely get to the feeders

When the race has now begun

In the span of just an eye blink

She meets them at the railing

They have no other place to go

Off the deck they all go sailing

Squirrels use four letter words

Of that I’m almost certain

I hear them all in rapid fire

As JJ leaps from behind the curtain

She earns her keep and so much more

Now rescued from her plight

She’s joined the pack and now each day

Ends with a three dog night

A great poetic story about a dog all we can all learn to love. If you continue writing about JJ's adventures I am sure you will have a captive audience! Well done!

So very glad to hear that you adopted another worthy dog - and I hope that many follow your lead.

PS: I also hope that the 'Be Kind To Squirrels Squad' doesn't hear about the job you've given J.J. I now feed both birds and squirrels after they picketed my place.

That was really cute and a grand solution. In the third, unwritten novel in my American Mole series, my hero JJ defeats another type of pest, homegrown redneck terrorists in Razorback Arkansas. You will need three dogs for protection if they live nearby.

Oh, yes, my little Zoe would love to get up close and personal with the squirrels around here. But I have her on a leash and stop her if she is getting too close. She had better hope and pray I never let go of that leash. Squirrels are vicious little fighters.
