The Drowning Trees

Harsh waters are not partial to trees.

The Drowning Trees

The water rages.
Pathetic and
unclothed tree branches
rise from the surface,
bearing semblance to
some gnarled creature
lifting its arms
and pleading for help
before going down
a third time.
All the while,
a massive trunk struggles
to breathe
and submerges itself
involuntarily
from view.
Upstream
and down
others have met
with the same fate.
In the end
all will fasten themselves
prone
to the riverbed—
there
to be eaten greedily
by the water’s
continual gnawing
at their decomposing bodies.

The poem makes the tree seem like a person ans the river a monster,
the title is very adequate: drowning is the word. Great style!
