Animal Farm

You recall the tale of Orwell's Farm
where no animal ever came to harm
in fact they all were the bosses
sharing equally profits and losses

One chicken said to his best mate
'you know what would be really great?
the one thing that I fancy the most
is a lovely piece of fresh toast'

His friend looked at him and said
'well you know there is no bread
nor do we have the necessary flour
though there is seed in the pig's tower

It was then that the chickens agreed
to commence with planting the said seed
they asked the horses to help plough
but were told 'we are too busy now'

The cattle and the oxen said the same
citing some important football game
the other animals too all declined
'other things to do' if you don't mind

So only the chickens had to toil
to plough and seed the fertile soil
straining for many an arduous day
whilst the rest were hard at play

Volunteers, hands in the air please put
to help us, the ripened wheat to cut
no other animal chose to show this sign
telling the chickens 'you'll be just fine'

Once more the chickens were left alone
to harvest the wheat just freshly grown
again throughout each day they worked
as the other farm animals shirked

The same was heard from the rest
when asked to perform another test
no help was there to be found
when the grain needed to be ground

By the time the bread was complete
the chickens were dead upon their feet
for everything had been done by them
nothing from the others did stem

Just as the fresh toast was put out
they were surprised to hear a shout
'We hope you intend to be truly fair
for everything you're supposed to share'

A few months later two horses talked
as amidst some others they walked
'that toast we had was really great
with butter dripping on the plate'

The second was very quick to agree
'Yes but one thing really puzzles me
knowing that it was so top drawer
I wonder why they've made no more'

I like any scenario where it is the animals who are in charge. Sometimes I wonder how humans got to be boss.

this is excellent-you should be writing kids books. This reminded me of a cross between Orwell, Chicken Little, the one with the chicken baking the bread and Waddell's "Farmer Duck"- but yet, it is totally original as your own voice comes through strongly.
