Long-due Thanks to Autumn

As will be obvious, I grew up when notebooks were made of cardboard and paper and keyboards were associated with typewriters. We still scrambled to fill 'inkpens' and scrawled margin notes in pencil. I hope that despite moldy-old references, this poem evokes pleasant memories of falls gone by. If you ask me, it is a shame that the after Labor Day tradition has gone by the wayside. Don't seem right!

You are my favorite, you know.   Oh, sure,
there are times you make me sad.  But jumping
in leaves you send pirouetting down helps chase them
off.   Sound tickles -- like Rice Krispies:  snap, crackle,
pop!  Who can stay blue with you holding all these fashion
shows?  That pill Charles Dickens dubbed Mrs. Micawber
cracked a smile in the fall, I bet.   Have to love Jack Frost’s
outrageousness.  Way he sees that yellow, orange, wine,
and gold are woven into every shade of green.  Persimmon
and aubergine all the rage this year, my dears.  Frost  so wise
to include the gray that signals the maturity to let go and meld
with rain, snow, and the other things spring has ordered
for the show it is planning.

You’re so generous.  Christmas and Chanuka without the hunts
for gifts and elaborate meals to prepare.   I find myself humming
School Days, School Days, and running mental hands over
spanking new notebook paper ruled with blue and daffodil-
yellow pencils sharpened to elegant points.  Chat about
drop-add, teachers, dorms, and loveboats pepper air already
spiced with the smell of bonfire-roasting hot dogs
and marshmallows.  Crude stick I whittle triggers laughs
as it bursts into flames.  Cooling nights ripen with the subtle
but distinctive odor of cedar-chip-stored wool, smoke,
and hints of rain.  Footballs thunk, and cheers go up.    Students
pile into coffee houses and pizza parlors to relax or check
to see if part-time jobs are available.  Perfume from hastily
unpacked shampoo stirs into the musk rising from leaves,
exhaust,  and, as Dickens wrote, High Expectations.  All goes
so fast.   Takes your breath away.

Thank you for taking me with you.  See you next year, I trust.

Avid Fan

My favorite time of year, too. Your poem brought back many memories, especially those of going back to college in the fall to a small town whose countryside was emblazoned with magic and wood smoke. Where trysts would occur in that magic place called the “Devils punch bowl.”

Enjoyed immensely,

Ron

you fell for it Pea -- the rapture of fall with all of its explosions of last colors to be dashed by winter's stark dullness -- and you given us a special peek at a gentler time -- a time I too recall -- I bid you love and peace my dear friend -- Jon Michael

This and spring are my two favorite seasons. You have captured fall in such a way that it makes so inviting. I enjoyed this very much. Makes me feel like I'm there. May God bless you every day of your life.

Hmmm, I'd always thought, as a kid, that America was like Charlie Brown, but now my eyes have been opened to see that it was like Happy Day's with The Fonze. :)

Great word pictures, one can really visualise these day of BC. (Before Computers) Over there.

Nice poem. It took me to far corners of my childhood when I really enjoyed the Fall. Now that I am in Florida, fall is beautiful but different from the falls I experienced when the snow and ice hit the sidewalks. AMEN!
